The UK offshore wind workforce has grown by 24% in two years, rising from 32,000 to nearly 40,000. This reflects strong sector growth, with global offshore wind capacity up 14% to 85 GW and projections suggesting it could reach 244 GW by 2030. The UK’s offshore wind industry is expanding rapidly, supporting thousands of skilled jobs and contributing significantly to the economy.

Construction is now well underway with the state-of-the-art cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria mobilised to install the high voltage export cables. These works involve simultaneous laying and burial, operating 24/7 from the port of Karlskrona in Sweden, and are a key part of ensuring safe and reliable transmission of power from offshore turbines to the onshore grid.

Dogger Bank

North of us, the Dogger Bank Wind Farm, located 130–200 km off the Yorkshire coast, is set to become the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

Developed in three 1.2 GW phase (A, B, and C) it will deliver a total capacity of 3.6 GW, powering around six million UK homes annually. Construction began in 2022, and Dogger Bank A already began generating electricity in October 2023 using GE’s groundbreaking 13 MW Haliade‑X turbines, installed by the record-breaking jack‑up vessel Voltaire.

This project includes pioneering features: it’s the UK’s first offshore wind farm with an HVDC transmission system for efficient long-distance power export, and it spans an area nearly the size of Greater London. Dogger Bank also supports supply chain growth, creating over 2,000 UK jobs during construction and 400 long-term roles for operations and maintenance based at the Port of Tyne.
