Gode 3

On Wednesday this week, a joint collaboration between Ørsted, Nuveen Infrastructure and Siemens Gamesa saw its first power delivery at the Gode 3 Wind Farm. This new 253MW offshore wind farm of 23 wind turbines is situated just 32km off the island of Norderney in northern Germany.

According to Siemens Gamesa:

“Each SG 11.0-200DD has a capacity of 11MW, with a rotor diameter of 200m. The nacelles for the units are produced in Siemens Gamesa’s Cuxhaven factory in Germany while the 97m-long blades are manufactured at the company’s site in Aalborg, Denmark.”

This is all positive news for the global wind industry and Germany in particular, who were adversely affected by disrupted energy supplies from Russia, following the Ukrainian war.

A green Germany

Germany has a high percentage of renewable electricity – it stood at 59.7% in 2023 and this is how it compares with other nations, in terms of foreign investment in green power technologies:

  1. The UK. Yes, we attract the most foreign investment, with 10 new projects in 2022 leading this figure. Scotland spearheads offshore wind investment. Offshore wind projects in Scotland alone attracted $54.8bn worth of pledged foreign capital investment.
  2. Egypt comes second in the global renewable investment table – its wind industry is developing, though it leads in green hydrogen production.
  3. Third place goes to Australia. It leads on green hydrogen, but this vast country is positioning itself as a renewables superpower, and in addition to hydrogen, it makes the top 10 in the wind, solar and battery tables.

Germany, though a relative newcomer to offshore wind (2010) is expected to become a global leader. Most of its wind farms are located in its North Sea and its main issues so far centre around transportation of this green power. Its wind turbines produce high MW outputs but, just 5 years ago in 2019, it was reported that only 4% was used as transmission capacity was so undeveloped.

Given the rapid pace of change in the offshore wind industry, however, with the development of Gode 3, these 5 year old figures should become a footnote in the German industry’s history.

We watch Gode 3 with interest at HSEQ-360 Limited.
