Seagreen Offshore is a major offshore wind farm project located 27 km off the coast of Angus in eastern Scotland. Its operational base is in the Port of Montrose.

Developed through a partnership between SSE Renewables and TotalEnergies, it’s part of the UK’s efforts to expand renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. 

The project consists of multiple phases, including SeaGreen Alpha and Seagreen Bravo, each involving the construction of numerous large wind turbines positioned in the North Sea.

It is Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm and is a joint venture between TotalEnergies (25,5%), PTTEP (25,5%) and SSE Renewables (49%), the Seagreen wind farm in the north-east of Scotland covers the energy needs of 1.6 million UK homes. It is also, remarkably perhaps, the world’s deepest fixed bottom wind farm. Another key fact is the size of the 114 turbines: each turbine has a maximum height of up to 204m to the tip of the blade with a blade diameter of 164m.

Seagreen began generating green energy in August 2022, with all 114 wind turbines becoming fully operational some 14 months later in October 2023, with an anticipated lifespan of 25 years.

Seagreen Alpha is one of the two main phases (Alpha and Bravo) of the Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm. Seagreen Alpha, along with its counterpart Seagreen Bravo, collectively aims to generate over 1,075 MW of renewable electricity.

Seagreen is in illustrious company in Scotland with its other offshore wind farm neighbours. These include:

1.  Moray East Offshore Wind Farm

Location: 22 km off the coast of Aberdeenshire in the Moray Firth.

Capacity: 950 MW.

Partners: Ocean Winds (a joint venture between EDPR and ENGIE).

Key facts: operational since 2021, it provides clean energy for up to 950,000 homes and is known for its relatively low production costs.

2. Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm

Location: Moray Firth, 13 km off the Caithness coast.

Capacity: 588 MW.

Partners: SSE Renewables, Red Rock Power Limited, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.

Highlights: one of Scotland’s largest completed offshore wind farms, operational since 2019, powering around 450,000 homes.

3. Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) Offshore Wind Farm

Location: Firth of Forth, 15 km off the coast of Fife.

Capacity: 450 MW.

Partners: EDF Renewables and ESB.

Benefits: expected to supply power to around 375,000 homes. Its construction and operation support a wide range of local jobs and economic benefits.

4. Moray West Offshore Wind Farm (Upcoming)

Location: adjacent to Moray East in the Moray Firth.

Capacity: around 860 MW (planned).

Partners: Ocean Winds.

Highlights: still under development, but aims to supply renewable energy to hundreds of thousands of homes. We have blogged too about Moray West here.
