The Scottish Government has granted planning consent for what will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Berwick Bank, developed by SSE Renewables. 

Located 38 km off the east coast of Scotland in the North Sea, the project will have a capacity of up to 4.1 GW and include as many as 307 turbines. 

Berwick Bank – impressive stats

Once operational, Berwick Bank will generate enough clean electricity to power over 6 million UK homes each year, more than double the number of households in Scotland. 

The project will also support an estimated 4,650 jobs in Scotland and up to 9,300 across the UK during peak construction, with an overall economic contribution of around £8.3 billion throughout its lifecycle.

Scotland’s offshore wind sector is blossoming

This approval represents a significant expansion of Scotland’s offshore wind capability. It will increase the country’s current operational capacity by nearly 25 percent and support the UK’s ambition to reach 43 to 50 GW of offshore wind by 2030. 

Environmental conditions applied

Environmental conditions have been applied to the approval, requiring a detailed seabird compensation plan to be submitted before construction begins. This follows two years of aerial surveys and ecological studies, with developers using artificial intelligence tools, developed with partners including Microsoft and Avanade, to better understand and minimise the project’s environmental impact.

Donald Trump and Scotland

The announcement follows renewed political attention on wind energy, including criticism by former US President Donald Trump, who recently visited Scotland and voiced opposition to offshore turbines. However, the Berwick Bank development had been in planning for years and Scottish officials have remained focused on long-term climate and energy goals. Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes described the project as a crucial step toward meeting net-zero commitments. UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband called it a significant boost for clean energy and national energy security.

Seagreen loses its crown?

The Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm is currently Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm and among the most significant in the UK. 

Located around 27 km off the Angus coastline in the North Sea, the wind farm was developed by SSE Renewables, TotalEnergies, and PTTEP. It became fully operational in October 2023 and consists of 114 Vestas turbines, each rated at 10 MW, giving it a total capacity of 1,075 MW. This is enough to power approximately 1.6 million homes and offset over 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Seagreen features the world’s deepest fixed-bottom turbine foundations, reaching seabed depths of nearly 59 metres. Power is transmitted via underground cables from landfall at Carnoustie to a substation near Dundee. A potential expansion of the project could increase its capacity to 1.5 GW, with consent already granted for an additional 36 turbines.
