The East Anglia Three offshore wind farm marks a milestone in the UK’s clean energy transition.

Situated approximately 69 kilometres off the Suffolk coast in the North Sea, the project will feature 95 Siemens Gamesa turbines, each rated at 14.7 megawatts, delivering a total installed capacity of roughly 1.4 gigawatts. Once operational, in late 2026, it is expected to provide renewable electricity to around 1.3 million British homes and cut millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

 £3.6 billion secured

In July 2025, Masdar and Iberdrola reached financial closure for the project. They secured about £3.6 billion, equivalent to €4.1 billion, in senior debt from a syndicate of 23 international banks. This was supported by a guarantee from Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund, known as EIFO. The financing package was oversubscribed by more than 40 percent, demonstrating strong lender confidence. The total project cost is estimated at around €5.2 billion.

The role of export finance

The EIFO guarantee alone amounts to 4.45 billion Danish kroner, which is approximately £500 million or 690 million US dollars. This marks EIFO’s first guarantee to an Iberdrola-owned entity and demonstrates the important role export finance can play in supporting the global green transition. Financing is underpinned by revenue certainty through a 15-year CPI-linked Contract for Difference awarded under UK government auctions, along with a long-term Power Purchase Agreement signed with Amazon in 2024. The project is expected to support over 2,300 jobs during construction and around 100 permanent roles once operational.

East Anglia Three forms part of a broader strategic alliance between Masdar and Iberdrola

This partnership, worth around €15 billion, was announced in December 2023 and aims to accelerate clean energy development across key markets in the UK, Germany and the United States.
